1812 The first White House wedding took place as Lucy Payne Washington, the sister of first lady Dolley Madison, married Supreme Court Justice Thomas Todd.

1912 British explorer Robert Falcon Scott, with his doomed expedition stranded in an Antarctic blizzard after failing to be the first to reach the South Pole, wrote the last words of his journal: “For God’s sake look after our people.”

1936 German Chancellor Adolf Hitler claimed overwhelmi­ng victory in a plebiscite on his policies.

1968 After sweeping the Indiana Pacers, the Pittsburgh Pipers went on to face the Minnesota Muskies in the Eastern Division finals of the American Basketball Associatio­n playoffs. (The Pipers went on to win the ABA championsh­ip.)

1971 Army Lt. William L. Calley Jr. was convicted of murdering 22 Vietnamese civilians in the 1968 My Lai massacre. (Calley ended up serving three years under house arrest.)

2010 Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up in twin attacks on Moscow subway stations jam-packed with rushhour passengers, killing 40 people and wounding more than 100.
