Dukes drop first in A-10

Duquesne scores just 17 in 2nd half as five-game winning streak ends

Duquesne goes cold in the second half and suffers first A-10 loss of the season on the road at Rhode Island, 77-55.

Fatts Russell had 23 points as Rhode Island routed visiting Duquesne, 77-55, Wednesday night.

Jeff Dowtin had 17 points for Rhode Island (13-5, 5-1 Atlantic 10), which earned its fifth consecutiv­e win. Tyrese Martin added 13 points and 11 rebounds and Cyril Langevine had five assists.

Russell, who entered ranked third in the conference at 19.2 points per game, made a 3-pointer in transition to cap Rhode Island’s 12-0 run for a 46-41 lead.

Marcus Weathers had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Dukes (15-3, 5-1), whose five-game win streak came to an end.

Michael Hughes, ranked third nationally in blocked shots, had three blocks and Maceo Austin had 10 rebounds.

Sincere Carry, who was second on the Dukes in scoring heading into the contest with 11 points per game, was held to three points.

Weathers scored 12 points in the first half as Duquesne led 38-30 at the break. The Dukes’ 17 points in the second half was a season low for the team.

Penn State 72, Michigan 63: Lamar Stevens scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half, and visiting Penn State (14-5, 4-4 Big Ten) was in control for most of the game in the victory against Michigan (11-7, 2-5). Curtis Jones scored 18 points and Myreon Jones added 16 for the Nittany Lions, who handed Michigan its third loss in a row.

Penn State also beat Michigan last season.

This is the first time the Nittany Lions have won consecutiv­e games against the Wolverines since 2008 and 2009.

Women

Oklahoma State 57, West Virginia 55: Vivian Gray scored 22 points and assisted Clitan de Sousa on the winning basket with 20 seconds left as visiting Oklahoma State (12-6, 3-3 Big 12) handed No. 25 West Virginia its third loss in a row. Kysre Gondrezick missed a tying shot in the final seconds for the Mountainee­rs. Gondrezick led the Mountainee­rs (13-4, 3-3) with 11 points.

Duquesne 84, George Mason 63: Junior center Laia Sole led the host Duquesne women with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and Libby Bazelak added 18 points as the Dukes (13-6, 33 Atlantic 10) pulled away from George Mason (7-12, 15). Kiersten Elliot added 14 points off the bench and guard Nino Aho added another 10 in the win.
