Koepka finishes strong to win St. Jude title
Brooks Koepka had three birdies in a fourhole stretch on the front nine and cruised to a three- stroke victory in the FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.
Playing with Rory McIlroy in their first finalgroup pairing, the topranked Koepka closed with a bogey- free 5- under 65 at TPC Southwind for his seventh PGA Tour title. He finished at 16- under 264.
McIlroy followed his third- round 62 with a 71 to drop into a tie for fourth at 11 under.
Webb Simpson had a 64 to finish second. Marc Leishman ( 67) was third, four strokes back. Tommy Fleetwood ( 66) and Matthew Fitzpatrick ( 69) joined McIlroy at 11 under.
Koepka wrapped up the regular- season points title a week early and claimed a $ 2 million bonus from the Wyndham Rewards program. He is assured to going into the FedEx Cup playoffs as the No. 1 seed.

Bernhard Langer beat Paul Broadhurst by two shots to win the Senior British Open in Lytham St. Annes, England, for his record- extending 11th senior major title.
• Jin Young Ko fired a 4- under 67 in the rainswept final round to win the LPGA Evian Championship at Evian- LesBaines, France, by two shots at 15- under 269.
• Collin Morikawa birdied his final three holes to win the Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nev. Morikawa closed with seven birdies in the modified Stableford system.
Swimming
American Caeleb Dressel won his record eighth medal at the world swimming championships helping the U. S. to silver in the 400- meter medley relay after anchor Nathan Adrian was overtaken for gold in the closing meters in Gwangju, South Korea. Dressel’s haul included six golds at the biggest meet after the Olympics. Simone Manuel completed a sweep of the 50- and 100- meter freestyles, the first American woman to achieve the feat. Manuel raced one length of the pool in 24.05 seconds to earn her third gold and fifth medal overall. The U. S. team finished atop the medals table with 27, including 14 golds.
Baseball
The New York Mets are close to completing a trade to acquire All- Star pitcher Marcus Stroman from Toronto. The Mets would send the Blue Jays two of its top pitching prospects, 24- year- old left- hander Anthony Kay and 18- yearold right- hander Simeon Woods Richardson.
• New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia is back on the injured list because of right knee inflammation.
Auto racing
Robert Hight raced to his 50th Funny Car victory at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals in California. The points leader won for the fifth time this season and second consecutive year at Sonoma with a 3.973- second run at 325.45 mph in his Camaro.
• Scott Dixon held off rookie teammate Felix Rosenqvist by 0.0934 seconds in the Honda Indy 200 in Lexington, Ky., to put himself back in contention to defend his IndyCar season championship.
• Max Verstappen won a chaotic and rain- soaked German Grand Prix in Hockenheim, Germany, as championship leader Lewis Hamilton finished 11th.
Tennis
Jil Teichmann of Switzerland beat top- seeded Kiki Bertens in straight sets to win the Palermo Ladies Open in Sicily. The eighth- seeded Swiss triumphed, 7- 6 ( 3), 6- 2, to clinch her second WTA Tour title.
• Defending champion Nikoloz Basilashvili beat Andrey Rublev to win the Hamburg European Open in Germany for the second year in a row. The fourthseeded Georgian won, 7- 5, 4- 6, 6- 3.
• Albert Ramos- Vinolas ended 455th- ranked Cedrik- Marcel Stebe’s charmed run to the Swiss Open final in Gstaad, Switzerland, winning the title match, 6- 3, 6- 2. Stebe was the lowest- ranked finalist on the ATP tour for a decade.
Track and field
Dalilah Muhammad broke a 16- year- old world record in the 400- meter hurdles by finishing in 52.20 seconds on a drizzly night at the U. S. championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Muhammad’s previous best time was 52.64 in 2017.
