Airport Authority to cut 16 jobs
Layoffs come ahead of $1.1 billion modernization project
The Allegheny County Airport Authority is laying off 16 people, effective June 26.
Positions being eliminated include managerial, office staff, and operation and maintenance, according to the authority. The decision came following a review of authority needs, job roles and responsibilities.
“While we do not take decisions that impact jobs lightly, the aviation industry and nature of our work at Pittsburgh International Airport has changed over the past several years,” authority CEO Christina Cassotis said.
“Creating a more cross-functional and agile team allows us to become more efficient, better serve our customers, and continue to support the growth of our region.”
Employees losing their jobs were given three weeks’ notice and an undisclosed severance package. They also will be offered outplacement services.
In all, the authority employs about 450 people.
Spokesman Bob Kerlik said he did not know how much money the cuts would save. The positions, a mix of union and nonunion, are funded by the authority’s $112.3 million operating budget.
The cuts come as the authority prepares to launch a $1.1 billion modernization at Pittsburgh International Airport that includes a new terminal for ticketing, security and baggage claim.
It will replace the existing landside building, which now is used for those purposes.
The project will be paid for by bonds supported by revenue obtained from the airlines, concessions, parking, and oil and gas drilling.
