Trinity turns back McKeesport

Trinity is headed to the WPIAL boys basketball semifinals.

Those words have never been written.

Dylan Kern scored 14 points and Trinity used a big run at the start of the fourth quarter to defeat McKeesport, 48-39, in a WPIAL Class 5A quarterfin­al Friday at Baldwin.

Trailing, 33-31, after three quarters, Trinity (20-4) went on a 13-2 surge to take a 44-35 lead. The Hillers outscored McKeesport (15-9), 17-6, in the final quarter.

Zach Ecker added 11 points for Trinity. Terron Taylor led McKeesport with 17.

The Section 1 rivals split their regular-season meetings, with McKeesport winning the section title.

More Class 5A games

Mars 70, Hampton 51: WPIAL scoring leader Robby Carmody was held to 23 points (10 below his season average), but it was more than enough for No. 1 Mars (19-4), which rolled to the win at Butler. Adam Bittner led Hampton (11-13) with 14 points.

Highlands 66, West Allegheny 58: Johnny Crise scored 16 points and Shawn Erceg added 15 to propel Highlands (18-4) to a win at Fox Chapel. The Golden Rams won despite shooting 11 of 31 from the free-throw line. Isaiah Faulk paced West Allegheny (11-12) with 21 points.

Franklin Regional 28, Moon 26: In a game in which neither team made a field goal in the fourth quarter, Franklin Regional (19-4) slipped past defending champion Moon (18-6) at North Hills. Hunter Stone check tallied a game-high nine points for Franklin Regional. Both teams scored two points in the fourth quarter, all on free throws.

Class 2A

Sewickley Academy 83, Leechburg 49: Jett Roesing connected on seven 3-pointers among his 31 points in helping Sewickley Academy (19-4) throttle Leechburg (14-7) at Northgate. The Panthers shot 59 percent from the field (32 of 54).

Jeannette 74, Shenango 69: Robert Kennedy scored 20 points and Anthony Johnson chipped in 19 for Jeannette (19-3), which held off Shenango (15-9) at Gateway.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 73, Springdale 46: Austin Wigley’s 18 points propelled OLSH (21-2) over Springdale (13-9) at Canon-McMillan. Mike Zolnierczy­k poured in 25 points for Springdale.

Chartiers-Houston 53, Serra Catholic 44: Cam Hanley scored 22 points as Chartiers-Houston (19-5) raced to a 14-point halftime lead and never looked back in defeating Serra (18-5) at Peters Township. Khalil Smith scored 21 points for Serra.

PIAA Class 6A

Allderdice 60, McDowell 53: Jackson Blaufeld knocked down six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points to vault City League champion Allderdice (23-2) to a win against Erie McDowell (19-5) in a PIAA sub-regional semifinal at Fort LeBoeuf High School in Waterford, Pa. Highly regarded freshman William Jeffress had 18 for McDowell.
