Opinions varied concerning Kaepernick’s value

-

From wire dispatches

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan said he would be open to signing free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Khan responded “absolutely” when asked whether he would support signing Kaepernick if the team’s front office wanted to do it.

Khan said that while he would not have knelt during the national anthem to protest social injustice in the United States the way Kaepernick did, the billionaire businessman respects the quarterback’s right to express his beliefs.

Tom Coughlin, the team’s executive vice president, has final say on personnel decisions.

Coughlin declined comment Friday.

Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy said Kaepernick would represent too much of a distraction for some teams to sign him.

McCoy said the media “chaos” that signing Kaepernick would bring is not worth it for what he believes is just “an OK” player.

Kaepernick remains unsigned after opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Kaepernick and many of those who support him believe the NFL is banding together to punish the player for refusing to stand during the anthem in an effort to protest police brutality against blacks.

Kaepernick has 72 touchdown passes, 30 interceptions and 13 rushing scores in six seasons, better numbers than Jaguars quarterbacks Blake Bortles and Chad Henne.

Chiefs

Running back Spencer Ware left the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks with a knee injury. Ware suffered the injury on Kansas City’s opening drive. Ware, 25, is expected to be the Chiefs starting running back this season. The 5-foot-10, 229-pounder rushed 214 times for 921 yards and three touchdowns in the 2016 season, his first as the team’s No. 1 running back.

Patriots

New England receiver Julian Edelman limped off the field, trying to keep weight off his injured right knee, after making a catch against the Detroit Lions. Edelman had three receptions for 52 yards.

Vikings

More than five months after surgery on his right ankle, and six days after running back Latavius Murray signed with the Vikings as a free agent after playing for the Raiders, he finally will be free to carry the ball for his new team against the 49ers. “I’m just happy that I’ll be out there. So we’ll see how the workload goes,” Murray said.

49ers

San Francisco released outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks after eight seasons with the team. The 49ers cut Brooks Friday because they determined he would not make the roster and wanted to give him a head start on finding a new team.

Elsewhere

The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans have discussed contingency plans for their preseason finale Thursday if Hurricane Harvey heads toward the Houston area. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said playing the game at AT&T Stadium is an option, if needed. It is an open date at the stadium.
