The best week to take a hike?
Pennsylvania Hiking Week starts Thursday and runs through June 2. The annual promotion by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources with the Keystone Trails Association means some extra guided hikes for the public all across the state — mostly in state parks and state forests, but also in the Allegheny National Forest, on the Appalachian Trail and in community parks. At this end of the state, these include:
• At noon May 26, a hike on the Davis Run and McCune Run trails at Keystone State Park near Derry, Westmoreland County.
• At 11 a.m. May 27, a 2-mile spring wildflowers hike at Linn Run State Park near Rector, Westmoreland County.
• At 10 a.m. May 28, a 5-mile hike — on which hikers will learn to identify poison ivy and stinging nettles — at Raccoon Creek State Park near Hookstown, Beaver County.
• At 9 a.m. May 29, a hike on the Stone Lodge Trail at Keystone State Park near Derry, Westmoreland County.
The DCNR’s Alyssa Wentz notes that participants are asked to share their hiking experiences on social media with the hashtag #PAHikingWeek.
The week rolls into June 3, which is National Trails Day (#NationalTrailsDay), when there will be more organized hikes, including at Keystone and Raccoon state parks.
