Police: Driver ran light in crash that killed two

-

Two men were killed in a crash on Route 30 Thursday night in Westmoreland County after one of them ran a red light, authorities said.

The crash was reported about 7:30 p.m. at the intersection with Lewis Road in Unity, just east of Greensburg.

The county coroner’s office said Friday morning that Richard P. McLaughlin, 72, of Unity, the driver of one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. at Excela Westmoreland Hospital.

The other driver, Bryan Newhouse, 29, of Latrobe, was flown to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m., according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.

State police said Mr. McLaughlin was turning left onto Route 30 from Lewis Road when a car traveling west on Route 30 and driven by Mr. Newhouse failed to stop at the red light and crashed into Mr. McLaughlin’s car. The crash tore off the rear of Mr. McLaughlin’s vehicle. The rear piece then struck another vehicle stopped at the red light. The two occupants of that vehicle — ages 64 and 56 — were not seriously injured, police said.

The extent of injuries of the two passengers in Mr. Newhouse’s vehicle — two men, ages 34 and 23 — has not been released.

Mr. McLaughlin was riding alone.

Route 30 was closed in both directions between Lewis Road and Old Route 30 for several hours, authorities said.
