Police officer accidentally kills onlooker
MT. VERNON, N.Y. — A bystander accidentally shot by an undercover New York City police officer on Friday afternoon during an illegal firearms sting gone awry has died, the Police Department said on Saturday.
The bystander, identified as Felix Kumi, 61, was shot twice in the torso as the officer fired at a man involved in the botched sting. That man, a 37-year old who was not immediately named, was hit three times and hospitalized in serious condition. Mr. Kumi died early Saturday at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, according to the police.
Inflation expected to rise
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer said on Saturday that the persistently low inflation that has plagued the country in recent years could finally begin to reverse, but would likely rise slowly.
Mr. Fischer expressed faith in the central bank’s ability to return inflation to its goal of 2 percent, which is generally associated with a healthy economy. But he cautioned that amid wild swings in world financial markets and China’s devaluation of its currency, central bank officials are monitoring the global economy “even more closely than usual.”
Trump, Clinton lead in poll
The latest Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll, released Saturday, shows billionaire Donald Trump with the support of 23 percent of likely Republican caucus participants, followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 18 percent in the state that hosts the first 2016 nomination balloting contest.
For democrats, the results show Hillary Rodham Clinton is now the first choice of 37 percent of likely Democratic caucus-goers. She’s followed by Bernie Sanders at 30 percent and Vice President Joe Biden at 14 percent.
