Tablet images lead to arrest of man on child rape charge

A Lawrence County man who faces charges related to filming child pornography and the rape of a child waived his preliminary hearing Thursday.

Donald A. Miller, 43, of New Castle remains in custody in the Lawrence County Jail, unable to post $150,000 bail. He appeared in court before District Judge David B. Rishel.

Mr. Miller is being represented by the Lawrence County public defenders’ office, according to court records. A formal arraignment hearing is scheduled for March 4.

Police arrested Mr. Miller Jan. 2, a few days after a New Castle woman turned in the Samsung tablet computer she said she had purchased for $225 at an Ohio flea market from a man who introduced himself as “Don” from New Castle.

On Christmas morning, when she took a picture of her daughter, the woman found images and videos in the tablet’s camera folder that she believed depicted child pornography involving the man who sold her the device.

New Castle police, who used Facebook and information recovered from the tablet to identify people in the images and videos, charged Mr. Miller with rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child, indecent assault of a person less than 13 years old and filming of sexual acts involving a child.
