‘Fun Night’ scheduled tonight

- By Shannon M. Nass

“Swing your partner ’ round and ’round, and turn your corner upside down.”

Such rhyme is music to the ears of Edward and Ruth Bailey of Upper St. Clair, who do-si-do and promenade every week with members of the Peanut Squares dance club.

“We really, really enjoy it,” she said. “It’s so much fun. That’s all I can say. You have to try it.”

For those who would like to give square dancing a whirl, the club is offering a free Fun Night from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight at SS. Simon and Jude Parish, 1607 Greentree Road, Scott. No experience is necessary, and singles or couples of all ages are welcome. Casual attire and comfortable shoes are recommended. Refreshments will be served.

The dance club was founded in 1979 by Charlie Brown of Carnegie; accordingly he named the group after the Peanuts comic strip. The initial group of 24 swelled to 140 members at its peak in 1995.

Mr. Brown has since died but club president Sally Anderson of Mt. Lebanon said the group is still going strong with about 45 members.

The club is open to people of all ages; current ages range from 40s to late 80s. Dues are $10 a year.

Members kick up their heels and cut some rug from 7 to 10 p.m. every Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall at SS. Simon and Jude.

Four couples, arranged in a square, face the middle and await the cues of the caller to the beats of instrumental countrywestern, rock, pop and bluegrass music.

The club also holds dances for special occasions throughout the year such as Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and a 1950s dance, where members wear period dress.

Mrs. Anderson joined the club seven years ago and has been president for the past year. Her husband, Richard, is a member, too.

In addition to fun, Mrs. Anderson said, membership has many other benefits, such as sharpening concentration skills and getting
