Pet adoption rules offensive to cat owner.

-

I understand that Pet Rescue by Judy has helped find adoptable homes for many stray and abandoned animals. But I was surprised to learn that I was “denied” the opportunity to adopt a 3-year-old cat because I allow my current cat outside and inside.

Apparently, Pet Rescue by Judy’s philosophy is that only those who intend to keep cats indoors may adopt them.

I informed the adoption coordinator that I would abide by this rule if I were allowed to adopt the cat. She again denied my offer, stating that I was allowing my cat to be in danger, and therefore I was not a suitable adopter. She was clearly judging me. I wish parents could be screened so diligently.

I find it abhorrent that I was labeled a “bad mother” because I allow my inside/ outside cat the freedom and opportunity to explore. I also feel particularly bad for the cat that I wanted to adopt because she is not in foster care but is caged at the rescue facility.

Are we allowed to have different parenting styles?

The safety of an animal can never be 100 percent assured in any given situation, inside or outside. I also find it unfortunate that a nonprofit organization has such strong convictions. Based on this exchange, I would not feel comfortable donating to the organization, which is very disconcerting. Janne Boswell Leesburg
