LEAWOOD, Kan. — Julianne Marie Candler

-

died Jan. 12, 2021. Born in Grand Rapids, Minn., to a large Scandinavian family, she lived in many places but called Northwest Arkansas home.

She married, raised three sons, worked several jobs, and retired. Her last job was at Harris Baking Company in Rogers. She lived her life in three acts. The last act was her own. She believed in a virtue-based upbringing and led by example. She was wise, humble, brave, and charitable to those in need. She taught her sons to identify native flora, to cherish the arts, to leave things better than we found them, not to play for the cheap seats, and that funerals were for the living. She wanted the best for her children and her six grandsons and would chew through concrete to ensure their success.

There are cooks and there are cooks. She could cook. She made spaetzle for Thanksgiving, oyster stew on Christmas Eve, homemade root beer in the summer, and during any season friends. She knew what good food was and she would tell you when she found it.

She had a taste for adventure and loved to travel. Around the globe she rode bikes, trains, and horses and sailed ships and balloons. In her 60s she zip-lined, did the polar dip, went to plays, and made new friends. Wherever she went she was kind to strangers, children, animals and the elderly. Her final months were an unfortunate tableau of our time as she was rooted to a hospital bed and unable to accept visitors. During her last days she asked that others live as she did and leave this world better than they found it.
