Welk Resort Theater captures “million dollar moment”

-

It was Dec. 4, 1956 and Sun Records Studio owner Sam Phillips had scheduled a recording session with rockabilly guitar hero Carl Perkins. Phillips had just discovered his next star, Jerry Lee Lewis and hired him as the session player for Perkins. Phillips had recently parted professional ways with an early discovery, Elvis Presley but Elvis was coming in just to say “hi”. Phillips, the “godfather of rock n’ roll,” was responsible for Johnny Cash’s early fame and called him to come down to the studio to see his old friends.

The opportunity arose to get his four discoveries in the same recording studio. An impromptu jam session ensued, a quick acting studio engineer hit the record button and the rest is rock n’ roll history.

Relive that “million-dollar moment” in time with the cast of Million Dollar

Quartet at the Welk Resort Theatre through December.

Chris Cathcart, who manages the Tony Award-winning Broadway style musical, knows why Million Dollar Quartet is a #1 hit with music fans around the world. “It’s the music,” he said. “It’s 100% live! We don’t just hire people who look like these guys and can lip sync. The guys in the band onstage are actually singing and playing the music. No sound tracks. Elvis is playing guitar. Cash is playing guitar. Jerry Lee Lewis is playing piano. Carl Perkins is on guitar. These are super talented musicians, the music is great and it’s all being played live onstage.”

You’ll be dancing in your seat to rockin’ classics like Blue Suede Shoes, Folsom Prison Blues, Great Balls of

Fire and That’s All Right Mama, plus twenty more million dollar favorites. See and listen to this over-the-top tribute to that one-ofa-kind night as the Million Dollar Quartet comes to life at Welk Resort Theatre.
