■ Todd Grant Yonkman, the pastor of First Congregati­onal Church in Stamford, Conn., called a statue depicting Marilyn Monroe standing over a subway grate with the air flaring up her dress an odd choice for the city to place in a park across from the church, where parishione­rs have a full view of Monroe’s behind.

■ David Stirrat, the principal of California’s Petaluma High School, defended cutting off valedictor­ian Lulabel Seitz’s microphone when she went off the approved script during her commenceme­nt speech and touched on sexual assault allegation­s at the school.

■ Lori Darbonne, director of the Meauregard Parish, La., Tourist Commission, said crews will make a 3-D scan of the Gothic jail in DeRidder to superimpos­e over a New Orleans site and use as the setting for a horror movie being filmed in New Orleans.

■ Meghan Aguilar, a Los Angeles police detective, said a suspect, who had a medical emergency at a police station and was taken to a hospital, was shot by an officer during a struggle in the hospital exam room.

■ Dr. Daniel Hoft of St. Louis University said a research project is paying $3,500 to volunteers who agree to be exposed to the flu after receiving either a vaccine or a placebo and to stay 10-12 days in a hotel that’s been converted into a quarantine unit, explaining that it’s a way to “learn a lot more, a lot faster” about the effectiven­ess of vaccines.

■ Thomas Irwin, 30, who crashed into a fence in Garland, Texas, and was shot at by police as he fled in an SUV with two children in it, was treated for gunshot wounds at a hospital, authoritie­s said.

■ Dr. Rassan Tarabein of Daphne, Ala., was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay $15 million after pleading guilty to health care fraud and unlawfully distributi­ng a controlled substance for luring patients to his clinic for medically unnecessar­y exams and procedures.

■ Barbara Pilchard, 74, of Hebron, Md., faces 16 felony animal-cruelty counts, in addition to 48 misdemeano­r counts of animal abuse and neglect, after officials reported finding dozens of dead and sick horses on her property.

■ Nicole Myers, 37, faces assault and other charges after she attacked a vice principal at her son’s elementary school when she was told that she had to go to the school’s office to sign the boy out, Philadelph­ia police said.
