Light snow predicted around state Monday

The National Weather Service predicts Arkansans will see a light snowfall Monday night.

The forecast shows a snowfall accumulation of more than one-tenth of an inch for much of central and eastern Arkansas, starting Monday evening. Lighter accumulation in much of the state is possible.

The total snowfall will likely be about 1 inch or less, forecasters said Friday.

Arkansans will also feel much colder temperatures Monday night through Wednesday, with wind chill values falling into the single digits at nighttime. The low temperatures are predicted to be below 20 degrees for most of the state, with south Arkansas seeing lows in the lower 20s.

An overnight wintry blast that brought freezing rain, sleet and snow turned roads slick in much of eastern Arkansas on Friday morning.

The Arkansas Department of Transportation reported slush, ice or snow on a number of major thoroughfares east of Little Rock, including parts of Interstate 40, Friday morning.

Road conditions prompted superintendents to close schools or start classes later in parts of east and south Arkansas. The weather service reported most places in Arkansas that received wintry weather got a trace amount, although some areas in the eastern and southeastern regions got minor accumulations.

But the precipitation was enough to cause problems. I-40 and Interstate 55 were closed for a time because of ice-related accidents but later opened.
