Warehouses catch fire

FAYETTEVILLE — Firefighters put out a blaze engulfing two warehouses and igniting a third at 5:19 a.m. Saturday on property near a railroad, firefighters said Saturday.

No one was injured in the fire at 1396 W. Pettigrew St., firefighters said Saturday. Two of three warehouse-type structures collapsed during the fire, said Capt. Will Beeks, who’s also an assistant fire marshal.

“We’re just glad no victims were out there,” Beeks said.

Flames were shooting over rooftops — about 60 feet high — early Saturday when Bob Pohl called 911, he said. Phol works nearby and saw the old barn-like structures on fire, he said Saturday.

The fire was burning for awhile before being noticed, Beeks said.

The structures also weren’t well maintained or used regularly, Battalion Chief Mauro Campos said. Some of the buildings had old wood stored inside and burned readily, Beeks said.

Firefighters fought the blaze from a distance after seeing the extent of the fire, Campos said. No firefighters were sent in the buildings, he said.

The fire was out by 8 a.m., but firefighters continued to check all day Saturday to make sure the fire didn’t restart, Beeks and Campos said.

No damage estimates were available Saturday, firefighters said.

The 3- acre property is owned by Red Spot, LLC, and is worth about $92,400, according to county property records.

The property is overgrown with tall grass and shrubs and is at the end a narrow dirt road. The property was also difficult to find, firefighters said.

Firefighters remained on the property Saturday afternoon to investigate what caused the fire.
