Jenkins remains sidelined

-

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins still hasn’t been cleared to practice with his surgically repaired right shoulder. Coach Jason Garrett said Tuesday that Jenkins will continue his rehab and then see Dr. James Andrews for another checkup in “a couple more weeks.” Jenkins was in Florida on Monday to follow up with Andrews, who performed the surgery soon after last season. Garrett said the report from the checkup was good and the team wasn’t anticipating that he’d been cleared for practice. The coach said he has guarded optimism that the former Pro Bowler could be back in time to play in a preseason game.

The Minnesota Vikings will be without offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz for four to six weeks, a relatively short recovery period for a sports hernia surgery. Schwartz had the procedure Tuesday in Philadelphia. Coach Leslie Frazier said the team might be able to get him back by the regular-season opener Sept. 9. Schwartz was competing with Brandon Fusco for the starting right guard spot. Frazier also said that no further damage was found in the knees of wide receiver Greg Childs (Warren, Arkansas Razorbacks), who had surgery Monday in the Twin Cities area to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in each leg, a devastating injury that put his career in jeopardy before it began. Childs will do his rehabilitation with the team.

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon signed a four-year deal worth about $18.5 million Monday night and started earning his money Tuesday morning when he took part in his first training camp practice. Coach Mike Mularkey said after practice Tuesday that Blackmon would not play in the team’s first preseason game Friday against the New York Giants even though he is eligible to do so.

Green Bay Packers Coach Mike McCarthy has ruled out at least eight players for Thursday night’s preseason opener at San Diego, including wide receiver Greg Jennings, who is recovering from a concussion. Also ruled out for the Packers are tight end Ryan Taylor (concussion), wide receiver Tori Gurley (groin), running back Du’ane Bennett (knee), former Arkansas offensive lineman Ray Dominguez (ankle), fullback Jon Hoese (hamstring), tight end Eric Lair (knee) and offensive lineman Mike McCabe (hip).

Arizona Cardinals Coach Ken Whisenhunt calls Kevin Kolb’s injury minor and expects the quarterback to play in Friday’s preseason game against Kansas City. Kolb left Sunday’s Hall of Fame game with bruised ribs. He was limited in practice Tuesday, but Whisenhunt said he does not anticipate any problems for the quarterback through the rest of the week. Kolb is locked in a tight battle with John Skelton for the starting job.

The Chicago Bears have signed defensive end Derek Walker to a one-year contract and waived offensive lineman Tyler Hendrickson. The 6-4, 270-pound Walker, from Illinois, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Seattle Seahawks in 2009 and spent part of last season with the Chicago Rush, an arena team. Hendrickson was an undrafted rookie free-agent tackle from Concordia in St. Paul, Minn.

Oakland Raiders running back Mike Goodson was taken away from practice by ambulance with a possible neck injury following an on-field collision with teammate Philip Wheeler in Napa, Calif. Goodson was attempting to catch a pass from Carson Palmer during a passing drill when he was leveled by Wheeler with what appeared to be a helmet-to-helmet hit that could be heard at the opposite end of the field. The 25-year- old Goodson lay prone on the turf for about 15 minutes as teammates and trainers rushed over. Paramedics and firefighters arrived shortly thereafter, and Goodson appeared to move his legs and arms.
