Hamburg Public Library hosts used book sale May 20

- By Janet Barr Hamburg

The day anticipated by readers far and near, when tens of thousands of books are offered at very reasonable prices, comes on Saturday, May 20. The Hamburg Public Library’s used book sale opens at 8 a.m. at the Hamburg Middle School cafeteria, and runs until 1 p.m.

These books have been sorted by category and are conveniently displayed on the tables, a bonanza for shoppers eager to find good reading for months or years to come.

From the “olde” volumes that collectors prize, to the latest best-sellers, there are books that everyone can find to take home and enjoy. The traditional low prices have not changed since last year. And for an even better bargain, from noon until 1 p.m., shoppers can fill a large bag for $5, from all categories.

This popular book sale also will include CDs and DVDs. What it will NOT have are books that are torn, soiled or musty. The people who do the sorting all year are very particular about condition.

This year’s assortment is particularly fine, especially in the children’s, non-fiction, fiction and history categories. Books that have graced the personal libraries of many families have been donated for this sale, and others have been culled from the library shelves. Categories include fiction, non-fiction, sports, history, romance, biography, crafts, gardening, cookbooks, diet and health, classics, poetry and plays, children’s, young adult, atlases, religion, Bibles, mystery, sci-fi, western, foreign language, and large print. There are many in like-new condition, suitable for gift-giving. Anyone doing home-schooling can find helpful books in several categories, including one labeled “education.”

The people who work at this sale are always happy to see books get new homes, and to help readers to find bags of joy to take home.

To find the sale, from South Fourth Street in Hamburg, turn east onto Windsor Street. Then turn left at the High School, and proceed past it to the Middle School. The cafeteria is convenient to the parking lot.

All proceeds benefit the Hamburg Public Library, which has been serving northern Berks County for more than 110 years.
