MLB: Braves’ DFA ruins dad plan

The Braves designated infielder Charlie Culberson for assignment hours before his father was set to throw out a ceremonial first pitch on Father’s Day. Culberson, a 34-year-old from Rome, Ga., was cut before Sunday’s 14-6 victory over the Rockies in Atlanta. After he was let go, the father of Braves outfielder Michael Harris II took care of the first pitch at Truist Park. Harris went 5-for-5 and scored three times in the win. In Washington, Jesus Luzardo earned his first victory in three career starts at Nationals Park and the Marlins beat Washington, 4-2, to complete a threegame sweep and move 10 games over . 500 for the first time in 12 years. In San Diego, Manny Machado drove in two runs, Joe Musgrove worked six solid innings and the Padres beat the MLB-leading Rays, 5-4, to take the threegame series. In Chicago, Adam Frazier and Jorge Mateo each hit an RBI single during Baltimore’s three-run sixth inning, and the Orioles cooled off the Cubs, 6-3. In Oakland, Calif., Kyle Schwarber opened the game with his 20th home run and added an RBI single among his three hits to lead the sizzling Phillies to a 3-2 victory over the Athletics. In Kansas City, Mo., Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout hit back-to-back home runs to help the Angels defeat the Royals, 5-2, in the finale of a three-game series. In Houston, rookie Elly De La Cruz and Jake Fraley both drove in runs in a three-run 10th that lifted the Reds to a 9-7 win over the Astros.

In Arlington, Texas, Corey Seager and Ezequiel Duran each had four hits, and the Rangers beat the Blue Jays, 11-7. The Pirates are calling up heralded prospect Henry Davis. the top pick in the 2021 draft.

NBA: 3-time 6th Man winner retires

Lou Williams announced his retirement from the NBA on Sunday, ending a career after winning the league’s Sixth Man award three times and scoring more points off the bench than anyone in history. Max Verstappen tied the late Ayrton Senna for career victories and Red Bull won its 100th Formula One race as the Dutchman extended his season-long dominance on Sunday at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Verstappen won for the sixth time this season — the fourth in a row — and Red Bull remained a perfect 8-for-8 on the year. The victory for the two-time reigning world champion was the 41st of his career, which ties the 25year-old with Senna for fifth overall. Leona Maguire played her final six holes in 6 under and shot an 8-under 64 for a two-shot victory over Ariya Jutanugarn at the Meijer LPGA Classic, her second tour victory after two straight secondplac­e finishes in the Belmont, Mich., event. In Rotterdam, Netherland­s, goalkeeper Unai Simon saved two shots in a penalty shootout to help Spain break an 11-year trophy drought by beating Croatia after a tense Nations League final had finished 0-0.
