Extent of Engram knee injury unknown

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

HOUSTON — It looks as if the Giants are going to have to move forward without tight end Evan Engram, who was forced out of Sunday’s 27-22 victory over the Titans with a knee injury in the second quarter and never returned to the field.

Engram spent the second half standing on the sideline with nothing on his knee, but exited the locker room wearing a black brace on his right knee.

“Got up, immediately didn’t feel right, got examined, just didn’t feel right,’’ Engram said “I don’t know exactly the extent of everything.’’

Coach Pat Shurmur said, “We don’t know how bad it is.’’

Engram caught one pass for 19 yards before he was hurt. Another tight end, Rhett Ellison, had three re- ceptions for 39 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown when he beat Texans linebacker Zach Cunningham late in the second quarter to put the Giants ahead 20-3.

Three weeks into the season, Shurmur got his first victory as the Giants head coach. In the locker room, Eli Manning presented Shurmur with a game ball. Shurmur said he will bring a game ball back for general manager Dave Gettleman, who is not making road trips as he finishes up his cancer treatments while battling lymphoma.

“He’s the reason a lot of us are here,’’ Shurmur said. “He’s doing a good job fighting for his life.’’

As for getting his first win with the Giants, Shurmur said, “I told the team that when you’re no longer playing or coaching, these lockerroom settings when you win a game is what you’re going to miss. Hopefully we don’t miss that for a while here.’’

CB Antonio Hamilton suffered a groin injury in pregame warm-ups and did not play.

Rookie G Will Hernandez won a game for the first time since the end of the 2016 season, as he went 0-12 last year at Texas-El Paso.

“It’s like a drug to me,’’ Hernandez said. “I want more of it.’’

Saquon Barkley was hit on the knee on his first carry of the game and was replaced by Wayne Gallman and Jonathan Stewart for the next series.

“Not really much fighting through,’’ Barkley said. “It was a pretty good hit in the beginning but I was able to fight through it. I guess essentially I was fighting through it.’’

Shurmur said he saw Damon “Snacks” Harrison “come hobbling out a little bit” on the last defensive series of the game after apparently banging his knee.

“I think he’s OK,” Shurmur said.

CB B.W. Webb started in place of injured Eli Apple and held up against Will Fuller, who had five catches for 101 yards and one touchdown. DeAndre Hopkins, followed by CB Janoris Jenkins, had six receptions for 86 yards but did not take over the game. … Texans RT Julien Davenport had a rough game as he was called for five penalties, four of which were accepted.
