It’s a flap, Jack: IHOP name flip on griddle
Flip the pancakes. IHOP has given its customers a lot to chew on, saying it will undertake a mysterious name change next week to IHOb, but didn’t elaborate on what the new letter will stand for.
The 60-year-old franchise, which was born as the International House of Pancakes before it went acronym city on the world, didn’t say whether the “b” would stand for bacon, biscuits, just breakfast — or something else.
“For 60 pancakin’ years, we’ve been IHOP. Now, we’re flippin’ our name to IHOb. Find out what it could b on 6.11.18. #IHOb,” the company, which operates roughly 1,791 stores, tweeted.
The tweet spread throughout social media like syrup over a short stack — and not everyone was happy.
“someone sue @IHOP for changing their name what kind of anarchy is this #IHOb” tweeted one customer while another mused that the “B” stands for “International House of Bacon?” “This is stupid. I refuse to call it #IHOb — you liter- ally cannot make me.”
A spokeswoman for the company confirmed to The Post that the name change is not a joke.
Based in Glendale, Calif., IHOP parent Dine Brands Global said in regulatory filings that IHOP traffic has fallen in each of the last 10 quarters.
Dine Brands shares are up 21 percent this year, to $63.04 at Friday’s close.
