DRC asked to take reduction in salary

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

Not only is Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie not making a position switch, there is a real chance he will not return for a fifth season with the Giants. The veteran cornerback has been asked to take a significant cut in salary, according to NFL Network.

This is not a surprise, as Rodgers-Cromartie’s salary in 2018 is on the books for $6.48 million, with a salary cap hit of $8.5 million. If the Giants cut him with a June 1 designation, they would save $6.5 million on this year’s cap — money they can use heading into free agency and beyond. If Rodgers-Cromartie does not accept the pay cut — the two sides are reportedly not close — he will be released.

Last week, reports surfaced Rodgers-Cromartie was undergoing a position switch, from cornerback to safety, but that proved to be inaccurate — the Giants’ coaching staff was taken aback by that news. Rodgers-Cromartie, 31, moved inside to play the difficult slot corner role the past two years, as Eli Apple supplanted him as a starting outside cornerback. After a sensational 2016 season, Rodgers-Cromartie was solid, but not as steady in 2017 and he ran afoul of former head coach Ben McAdoo, prompting a onegame suspension.

A source told The Post the Tom Coughlin and Ben McAdoo coaching staffs grew frustrated with Rodgers-Cromartie’s tendency to take himself out of games, especially at critical junctures in the fourth quarter. The 10-year veteran missed just three games in his four years with the Giants — one was because of the suspension — but his reliability was at times questioned.
