Manning ‘excited’ about coach

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

MOBILE, Ala. — New head coach Pat Shurmur is going to call the plays on offense when he embarks on his first season with the Giants. That means there is an assignment for Eli Manning: Study and learn what Shurmur did so well in Minnesota to determine what he will bring with him to his new gig.

“I think I’ll definitely look at the Vikings’ offense from this past year and see what they did as he’s installing his offense and plays,” Manning said in an interview with giants.com. “You like to look back and see why they worked, why they didn’t work and just learn if there is some new concepts. It’s really just about getting faceto-face with him and learning how he goes through reads and make sure we’re on the same page.”

General manager Dave Gettleman, after taking a look at how Manning played throughout the 2017 season, has said he wants the 37-year-old quarterback to return for a 15th season with the Giants, and stressed Shurmur is on board. Manning and Shurmur have no history together, other than meeting last summer at the Manning Passing Academy on the campus of Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. Shurmur was there with his son, Kyle, the starting quarterback at Vanderbilt.

“So I know a little bit about him,’’ Manning said. “I know a little bit about his past when he was in Philadelphia and obviously the Browns and obviously this season with the Vikings and what he was able to do as offensive coordinator. So I’m excited about that and excited to get back to work with him and see how we can improve this team.

“Just excited to see how he calls games, how he looks at defenses, how he wants to pick them apart and just seeing his insight to that and learn from it. So we can see things the same way, have great communication and figure out how to score some points.”
