BlaZzz was ‘major’ napper in college
Mayor de Blasio’s habit of taking naps dates back to his NYU days, he and an old roommate revealed during a visit to their college dorm.
De Blasio and roomie Peter Dicpinigaitis took a nostalgic tour Tuesday of Weinstein Hall in Greenwich Village, where the two shared cramped quarters 35 years ago in their junior year.
Dicpinigaitis raised the subject of Hizzoner’s “brief power naps” as the two reminisced in Room 235 with three students who now live there.
“I’d take seven-minute naps, ’cause again, we would study — I personally would study from midnight to 3 a.m.,” de Blasio recalled. “I would say, ‘Give me seven.’ He would time seven minutes, and then back in the game.”
De Blasio conceded Dicpinigaitis — who studied pre-med and is now a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine — was a more diligent student. “He would study all of the time,” de Blasio said. “I had a different vision. I would go out to meetings and activist gatherings and social engagements, and I would come back around midnight and start studying.” De Blasio stopped by NYU and the High Line as part of his City Hall in Your Borough program, which previously has made stops in Staten Island, The Bronx and Queens. Dicpinigaitis recalled becoming fast friends with de Blasio in their freshman year. “We maintained a bond after college,” he said. “Bill was in my wedding party, and we’ve traveled together. We’ve stayed in touch.”
