Imperfect Familia stays perfect in 9th
The Mets lineup remains as dangerous as a Chihuahua, but Jeurys Familia is still batting 1.000.
The team’s closer pulled off a Houdini act Thursday night, closing out his 27th save in as many opportunities after putting men on second and third with no outs to seal the Mets’ slump-busting 4-3 victory over the Cubs at Citi Field.
“Just an unbelievable job. He’s been very, very good for two years,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “We just hopefully [can] get him in there a little bit more and not [have him] sit around for four days like he’s had to do.
“Hopefully he can pitch again tomorrow.”
It will go in the books as just another save — Familia’s 43rd in a row during the regular season — but his animated celebration when it was over told a different story.
The Mets desperately needed a victory after getting swept by the rival Nationals, and had rallied from three runs back against John Lackey. But Fa- milia walked pinch-hitter Miguel Montero after getting ahead 0-2, and allowed a ringing double to Ben Zobrist. Pinch-runner Travis Wood, a Cubs reliever, was held at third base, a decision that would cost the Chicago because Familia became unhittable.
He struck out Kris Bryant, pounding the young slugger with sinkers on the inner half of the plate. After Anthony Rizzo was intentionally walked, Familia also struck out rookie Willson Contreras with that bearing-in sinker and re- tired Javier Baez on a pop-up to first base.
“I’m looking for a ground ball [against Bryant], but I get a strikeout and I got a pretty good sinker tonight,” Familia said. “When I strike out the first guy, I have it in my mind I can strike out everybody with my sinker.”
The performance impressed one of the newest Mets.
“The ice running through that guy’s veins, he must just relish those pressure situations,” Brandon Nimmo said. “He’s just amazing.”
