Gee still not used to pen

JUPITER, Fla. — Dillon Gee still is getting used to the whole bullpen routine.

The Mets righthander, who has been squeezed out of the rotation, entered Wednesday’s exhibition game against the Marlins with two outs in the seventh inning and promptly allowed an RBI single to Scott Sizemore.

“[ Gee] is very awkward at it,” manager Terry Collins said following the Mets’ 74 loss at Roger Dean Stadium.

“It’s a whole different role for him and you could see it as he camein that inning; he hung back– toback sliders, which he never does. It’s a new phase in his game and we’re going to continue to run him out there in those situations.”

Gee said he still needs to get adjusted to the bullpen, but is confident he can handle the role. He was not charged for a run over 1 ¹ / ₃ innings on Wednesday and allowed just the single to Sizemore.

“I felt fine and I am pretty pleased the way it went,” Gee said. “I just wish I would have made a better pitch to that first guy.”

Josh Edgin flew to New York for evaluation at the Hospital for Special Surgery a day after undergoing an MRI exam in Florida on his elbow. Mets officials said no diagnosis had been relayed to themas of Wednesday afternoon.

The lefthanded reliever struggled in his appearance Monday, and then revealed he recently incurred discomfort in the elbow. Edgin is the only lefty reliever in camp on a major league contract.

Bobby Parnell has battled hamstring tightness in recent days that has curtailed him throwing froma mound, but Collins said he expects the righthander to possibly pitch in a game next week. Parnell, rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, isn’t expected to rejoin the Mets before May.

Lucas Duda likely will make his Grapefruit League debut on Sunday against the Rays, according to Collins.

The slugging first baseman has been taking batting practice the last four days after resting in the early part of camp because of discomfort in his left rib cage area.
