U.S. record crowd sees Man. U beat Real Madrid

-

Ashley Young scored twice in the first half, and Manchester United beat Real Madrid 31 on Saturday in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in front of the largest crowd to watch a soccer game in the United States.

United remained unbeaten in this year’s International Champions Cup, advancing to the final of the preseason tournament under new manager Louis van Gaal. Javier Hernandez added a goal in the second half for United.

The crowd of 109,318 at Michigan Stadium broke the previous U.S. mark of 101,799, set at the Rose Bowl for the 1984 Olympic final.

Gareth Bale scored for Real Madrid, but the European champions finished winless in three matches at this event.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the reigning world player of the year, came on as a secondhalf substitute for Madrid.

Olympiakos 2, Man. City 2

In Minneapolis, Dimitrios Diamantakos scored twice in regulation and Roberto Jimenez Gago made two saves in a shootout to help Olympiakos beat Manchester City 54 on penalty kicks.

Aleksander Kolarov put the Premier League champions 21 up in the 53rd minute with a penalty after David Silva was tripped in the Olympiakos box.

But Diamantakos tied it in the 65th minute when he picked up a pass at the top of the box, made a move to get past goalkeeper Joe Hart and blasted it into the open net

Manchester City opened the scoring on Stevan Jovetic’s goal in the 35th minute. Jovetic took a pass from Samir Nasri, dribbled past one defender, then split two others with a rightfooted shot that beat a flatfooted Jimenez Gago. Two minutes later, Diamantakos tied it for Olympiakos.

Intern Milan 2, AS Roma 0

In Philadelphia, Nemanja Vedic and Yuto Magatomo scored as Inter Milan beat AS Roma.

Inter broke a scoreless tie just moments before halftime. On a free kick from the left outside of the box, Dodo’s leftfooted service found Vedic at the center of the penalty box and his deflected header ticked off the fingertips of goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski into the upper right corner.

Roma almost tied it in the 48th minute, but Mattia Destro’s header barely missed. Nagatomo provided insurance in the 69th minute as he collected a loose ball in the right side of the box and buried it past Skorupski in the top right corner.
