Safety blitz by city at work sites

- BY GRAHAM RAYMAN

City building inspectors are checking 6,000 construction sites across the five boroughs for safety violations in advance of Thanksgiving, the Daily News has learned.

The deaths of two construction workers at Manhattan builds last month and a Dec. 1 deadline for workers at large sites to complete required 30hour safety training spurred the sweep.

“No family should have an empty seat at their dinner table this holiday season because safety wasn’t the top priority on a work site,” said Buildings Commissioner Melanie La Rocca. “We are sweeping construction sites citywide to enforce proper site safety and prevent needless tragedies. If bad actors ignore these safety precautions, they can look forward to a holiday present of tough enforcement and stiff penalties.”

Mayor de Blasio added, “Having every worker and supervisor on major construction sites appropriately trained by December 1 isn’t just about following the law — it’s about saving lives.” Site supervisors must have 62 hours of training.

There were two deadly construction accidents last month. Hardhat Stanislaw Supinsky was killed in a wall collapse at a historic synagogue on Norfolk St. on the Lower East Side on Oct. 21 (inset). Three days later, worker Luis Miguel Duran Solano, 24, was crushed by an elevator at the site of billionaire Richard Branson’s future highrise Virgin Hotel in Midtown.

The inspectors will be making sure proper scaffold safety precautions are being taken, that cranes are correctly installed and used according to approved plans and that workers are protected against falls. Sites where violations are found could be fined as much as $25,000 for each violation and be closed down.

Since 2015, the Buildings Department has added 250 inspectors and increased penalties for safety violations.
