Say ex-pol fooled by devious doc
Former Coney Island Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny, accused of scrubbing alcohol results for patients at a Brooklyn clinic that served as an opioids pill mill, was unwittingly following an unscrupulous doctor’s orders, his lawyer argued Monday.
In opening statements in state Supreme Court in Brooklyn, the Russiaborn lawmaker was portrayed as a faithful public servant who was pursuing the American dream and got blindsided by a pillpushing M.D.
Lazar Feygin, 72, pleaded guilty in March to felony charges related to his flooding the city with millions of illegal oxycodone prescriptions from two clinics, including Parkville Medical, where Brook-Krasny (photo) was involved as an administrator for Quality Laboratory Services.
“Let it be clear, Mr. BrookKrasny didn’t know any of the people in this case till the summer of 2016 after he was asked to visit Parkville because they needed a lab in the Metro Plus Plan,” his lawyer, James McGovern, said.
According to McGovern, Feygin asked Brook-Krasny to cut 35%-40% of the tests used in the patient screenings, including the test for alcohol abuse, which is required for patients going onto pain medications.
“Alec followed Dr. Feygin’s orders, and this is why he is sitting in that chair,” McGovern said.
McGovern also lashed out at federal agents who “misinterpreted” conversations they were wiretapping “and used it to say they got a politician.”
He also pointed out that in 2013 Brook-Krasny witnessed his own teenage son’s overdose on opiates.
“The idea that Alec would turn around after seeing his 19-year-old son and go deal drugs on the streets of Brooklyn is ridiculous,” McGovern said, as the former lawmaker’s daughter, sitting in court, broke into tears.
