METS WALK IT OFF

Overcome Familia meltdown to beat Reds in 10 innings:

But after the blown save in the ninth, his ERA shot up to 6.28.

“I’ve been having kind of a bad season,” Familia said through interpreter Alan Surriel. “I think today was a good sign. Starting to get rolling. I have lost a little bit of confidence from time to time, but I think this was a start in the right direction.”

After the Mets finally pulled it out in the 10th, Alonso casually compared McNeil to Hall of Famer Ted Williams for his careerhigh 4-for-5 night. McNeil gave the Mets a 1-0 lead on a risky bunt-single complete with a headfirst slide into first base in the second inning.

McNeil closed April having reached base safely in 25 of his 26 starts this season. Tuesday night marked his 13th multi-hit game of the season and 11th career game with three or more hits, extending his franchise record through 91 games.

“I let Pete get the walk-off,” McNeil quipped. “I could’ve done it. But I let him do it.”

Lost in everything was an excellent start from Jason Vargas. The left-hander held the Reds to one run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched.

Vargas cruised through five scoreless innings. He relied on his changeup for the majority of his strikeouts and fooled the Reds with quick work.

It wasn’t until the sixth inning, when Vargas faced Cincinnati’s lineup for a third time, that he began to struggle. Callaway decided he’d seen enough. Still, after that 1-2-3 fifth inning, Vargas had held a 1.32 ERA over his past three starts.
