Newton gets justice for hits
CHARLOTTE — Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s concerns about “illegal hits” have been heard by the NFL — and action has been taken.
A person familiar with the situation says Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Calais Campbell has been fined $18,000 for his hit on Newton in Sunday’s game.
Newton had a phone conversation with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday about his perspective on the hits he takes from defensive players while in the pocket.
“I got my point across. He got his point across. That’s it,” Newton said earlier Wednesday at his weekly news conference.
TURNER OUT: Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner abruptly resigned Wednesday, stunning the team two days after losing its second consecutive game with an offense nowhere to be found.
SMITH TO MISS JAGS: Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will miss Sunday’s game against Jacksonville after his head bounced hard off the turf twice during last weekend’s game in Indianapolis.
STILL A CHANCE: Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said there’s still pain two weeks after undergoing surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee, but he isn’t ruling himself out of Sunday’s game at Baltimore.
ON HIS CONSCIENCE: Jarvis Landry says he’ll change the way he targets his blocks in the wake of his illegal hit that briefly hospitalized Bills’ Aaron Williams. While the Dolphins receiver acknowledged Williams’ injury personally affected him, he said he’ll appeal his fine from the NFL. —AP
