Spence scores big Bundu KO
IT’S THE moment of Truth. Errol (The Truth) Spence, Jr. dominated Leonard (The Lion) Bundu in an NBC televised fight at Coney Island’s Ford Amphitheater on Sunday, outworking his opponent for five rounds before winning on a brutal knockdown in the sixth.
Spence kept his unblemished record intact with his eighth straight KO and the 18th of his career in 21 fights.
Bundu (33-2-2) was the aggressor at the start but quickly became overwhelmed as Spence took control.
The knockout came as Bundu struggled with his back to the ropes. An eventual right hook to the head sent him to the mat. Spence knew it was over and made a signal of wrapping a belt around his waist to the crowd.
That, ultimately, is the one-time Olympian’s goal, to challenge IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook for his title. His flashy win Sunday made Spence the mandatory challenger to Brook.
“Next time I’m fighting to put somethin (sic) around my waist…#worldtitlechase,” Spence posted on Twitter after the win.
Brook’s next fight is a highly anticipated one against middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin, a matchup that heavily favors the undefeated GGG.
But The Truth should eventually have his chance to dethrone Brook, though the only knock against him at the moment is his relative inexperience. The 26-year-old turned pro in 2012 and has only the 21 fights under his belt, though he is quickly rising through the ranks. He became the first boxer to stop Chris Algieri in a shocking TKO at the Barclays Center in April.
And now, after he put The Lion to sleep, the boxing community awaits Spence’s next move.
