Jeurys getting quite Familia with closer role

The Mets’ closer is getting increasingly familiar with his new role. And the Mets are getting increasingly confident in Jeurys Familia. Familia has a major-league leading 10 saves, including a five-out closeout Friday night. And he didn’t even take over the job until Jenrry Mejia was suspended 80 games for PED use on April 11.

“Obviously the way he’s throwing, the one thing anytime when you’re young and you bring in a guy with that kind of arm strength in the game, I think the thought process is ‘Jeez, don’t walk somebody.’ I think that’s no longer even thought about,” said Terry Collins, who didn’t use Familia in Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the Nats. “You don’t even think it, it’s now ‘Do what you do.’ Pound the zone with that stuff, and I think when he comes in the game guys have a good feeling that this game is going to be over with.”

Familia has recorded a save in each of his last 10 appearances, tying a single-season Mets record also held by John Franco (1999) and Armando Benitez (2001).

TALL ORDER

John Mayberry Jr. had never batted leadoff in six big-league seasons before joining the Mets. The 6-foot-6 outfielder was atop the lineup for the second time this season, replacing Curtis Granderson against lefty Gio Gonzalez.

“He laughed about it the other day, he said he’s the tallest leadoff hitter in the history of the game and that might be true,” Collins said of Mayberry, who went 0-for-3. “(Friday) night after the game we talked about who should we give the day off to, because I had to get John in there.

“Right now, Mike (Cuddyer) has not taken a lot of work at first base, so we just thought let Grandy have the day, we’ll stick with (Lucas Duda), because he’s swinging the bat pretty good against lefties and we’ll just see how the game goes. But we have to get John in there against this guy.”

Mayberry went in with a career .856 OPS against lefthanded pitching, but he is just 3-for22 this season, with a homer and a triple.

JUST SKIP IT

After saying he had considered it in recent days, Collins said he won’t be “skipping anyone” in the next turn through the rotation, despite off-days on Monday and Thursday. . . . Matt Harvey attended the Rangers’ Game 2 matinee win over the Washington Capitals earlier Saturday.
