Site tries to find the just write rental
IF ONLY the walls could talk before you signed a lease — well now they can.
Learning what your prospective neighbors think about a particular rental building is now a reality thanks to Swapt, a new apartments website that launched on Wednesday.
Swapt combines verified information about buildings, real estate listings — and user generated reviews — into one tidy package. Call it the Yelp of real estate. “Our goal is to be the No. 1 rental review site in New York and in the country,” Swapt cofounder and c chief operating o officer Michael Downing, 30, told the Daily N News.
Other webs sites including Y Yelp and Apartmentratings.com also offer usergenerated d reviews i of rentals.
But Swapt says it stands out by pulling together listings, building info and reviews together all in one place.
“It’s very hard to combine all these listings and reviews into one profile,” Downing said. “It’s a technological challenge.”
Since launching in a test version two months ago, Swapt has aggregated more than 4,000 current listings in New York City and 2,500 reviews.
The service is available nationwide. In addition to New York, its other major markets are San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
More than 80% of the reviews come from people who have signed up via Facebook, upping the chances that they’re legit.
In an effort to boost transparency, the site tries to flag reviews that come from brokers, Downing said.
Downing and Swapt cofounder Eric Wolfe, 32, were roommates in the city for years. They were inspired to launch Swapt after encountering rocky experiences of their own when searching for apartments.
“Our major frustration was not knowing what was out there,” Downing said. “There was no place to go to do research.”
Swapt has raised $700,000 so far from undisclosed investors.
The website isn’t churning out revenues yet but will look to do so by generating leads for landlords and property managers.
