Spectators won’t be allowed at ’21 tourney
COVID-19 regulations will lead to quieter Crosby Clambake in February
PEBBLE BEACH >> Spectators will not be permitted at February’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am because of COVID-19 restrictions.
Tournament officials said Friday afternoon that a decision needed to be made now because of construction needed to build infrastructure, such as grandstands, for the tournament.
“Unfortunately our ’21 event will be unlike any of the previous editions of the tournament since Monterey County remains in a tier that will not permit live audiences at professional events in California,” said Steve John, CEO of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, in a press release.
“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our guests, partners, vendors, volunteers, PGA Tour professionals, caddies, their families, and our community,” John said. “We continue to work closely with the PGA Tour, as well as local officials, to determine what our event will look like in February.”
The tournament, which tees off Feb. 11 and runs through Feb. 14, will still feature celebrities and will be televised by the Golf Channel and CBS. Fans also can follow along on the tournament’s social media channels on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Bill Murray is among those on a list of 20 celebrities who have confirmed they are playing. Canadian Nick Taylor won the 2020 tournament, while Kevin
Streelman finished second and 2019 champion Phil Mickelson finished third.
The TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational and the Pure Insurance Open, featuring PGA Champions Tour players, were held at Pebble Beach in the past few months without spectators being allowed.
