Milwaukee stepping forward

-

The June 25 edition of the Journal Sentinel printed an Associated Press article about the U.S. Conference of Mayors agreeing to shape a national climate policy (“At conference, U.S. mayors agree to shape national climate policy”).

Since the Trump administration has backed out of the Paris Climate Accord, more than 300 cities have stepped forward to declare support for the historic Paris agreement and to take responsibility for fulfilling the obligations of the agreement. I am proud that Milwaukee is one of those cities.

Mayor Tom Barrett was one of the early mayors to sign onto the Climate Mayors statement to support the Paris Accord. Then on June 20, under the leadership of Ald. Michael Murphy, our Milwaukee City Council passed a city resolution in support of the Paris Climate Accord. On June 23, Barrett had a public signing of that resolution that was attended by dozens of citizens and other elected officials.

Unfortunately, this significant event was not reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. As this newspaper has shifted its emphasis to more local coverage, it seems odd that it has ignored such an important piece of local news.

Milwaukee is fortunate to have the leadership of our mayor and city council who will take the steps necessary to seriously address global warming before it is too late to preserve a livable planet for future generations.
