CAMP REPORT

- Tom Haudricourt

On the field: Christhian Adames drilled a two-run home run off reliever Jacob Barnes in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Colorado Rockies a 5-4 exhibition victory at Salt River Fields. Barnes faced only two batters, surrendering the single and home run. Right-hander Chase Anderson started and went four innings, allowing four hits, four walks and one run, with one strikeout. Left-hander Tommy Milone, also in the mix for a rotation spot, went three innings as well, surrendering five hits and one run with one strikeout. “I thought they both did fine,” manager Craig Counsell said. “Chase was really efficient the first three innings. He had to battle through the fourth inning but got a double-play ball in a big spot. “Tommy got better as he stayed out there and got more pitches under his belt. He started getting a feel for his changeup and got some outs at the end with it. Both guys just took the next step.” Scooter Gennett made his first start in right field and had some tough plays, including a fly ball he let get over his head for a double by Mark Reynolds. “He got tested right away,” Counsell said. “Balls hit right over your head are the toughest balls. I’m glad it happened. He’s had that play now and can have a better feel next time.” Cactus juice: It was inevitable that the outrageous laughing fits of Brewers prospect Brett Phillips would make it onto merchandise in some form. Players have begun wearing T-shirts with a caricature of Phillips laughing, with one eye squinting as usual, and “HaHaHa” printed next to his face. On the back of the T-shirt are the words “Laugh It Off.” Phillips actually commissioned the shirts with hopes of selling them for charity if they take off. They were made by Mason Johnson, a friend of Gennett’s who owns “Print My T’s” in Gennett’s hometown of Sarasota, Fla. “That picture was actually made last year when the whole situation ‘blew up,’ “said Phillips, who gained instant fame in his first Brewers camp when videos were released of his laughing spells. “I’d been juggling the thought of putting it on a shirt and maybe in the future selling them and giving the proceeds to charity or some foundation. “I ordered 12 of them to see what guys would say and if they’d like them. They seem to love them. Scooter’s friend did a great job with them. We need to think about it and the licensing aspect and all of that. This is just a trial to see what people think.” Weather: Mostly sunny, 84 degrees. Scoreboard: Rockies 5, Brewers 4. Record: 10-9-1.
