Gordon helps Magic top Cavs, snap skid

-

Aaron Gordon scored 13 of his season-high 24 points during a decisive third quarter as the host Orlando Magic beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 103-83 to snap a two-game losing streak.

Nikola Vucevic was the only other Magic starter to reach double figures with 23 points. Terrence Ross scored 15 points, while

Khem Birch recorded 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for Orlando (5-2).

Collin Sexton scored 24 points to lead Cleveland (4-3).

Facing one of the NBA’s top defensive teams, the Magic regained some of the offensive spark they had lost during their past two games, when they failed to reach 100 points.

They can thank Gordon for much of that.

Gordon sank 5 of 6 shots in the third quarter, including his three three-point attempts, to kick-start the Magic. They outscored the Cavaliers 36-13 during the final 10:44 of the quarter to break open what was a two-point lead at halftime.

Markelle Fultz also played a big role in the quarter. After five first-half turnovers, Fultz recorded four points and six assists without turning the ball over.

During the pivotal third period, Orlando was 14 of 22 from the field and hit 6 of 10 three-pointers. The Magic closed with a season-high 15 three-pointers to help overcome 21 turnovers the Cavaliers turned into 26 points.

Gordon, who also grabbed 11 rebounds, tied a career high with six threepointers as he doubled his season output from behind the arc. Gordon was just 3 of 20 from the three-point line entering the game.

●Golden State 137, Trail Blazers 122: Stephen Curry let it fly from way out under pressure with a minute-plus left for another perfect swish on the way to a career-high 62 points as Golden State split a two-game set with Portland. Curry had the highest-scoring game in the NBA this season, finishing 18 for 31 and 8 of 16 on three-pointers after beginning with a 21-point first quarter. He had his 10th career 30-point half to help the Warriors take a 66-54 lead at the break.

●Spurs: San Antonio point guard Derrick White is out indefinitely after breaking his left second toe.White had offseason surgery on the same toe, but the Spurs said Monday the fracture is a new injury.

●Mask policy: The NBA is adopting a tougher policy regarding masks, telling teams Monday that players on the active roster will have to wear the face coverings in the bench area until they enter games. That memo was released on the same day the Brooklyn Nets ruled All-Star forward Kevin Durant out for Tuesday’s game against Utah in accordance with the league’s health and safety protocols for dealing with coronavirus. Among the new rules, which take effect Tuesday: players who are dressed for games and eligible to participate must wear a face mask until they enter the game, all players and coaches must wear face masks when outside the team environment if they are around other players and coaches, and players must report the names of any private trainer, therapist, chiropractor or other specialist who they work with outside of the team facility. Meanwhile, a person with knowledge of the situation said Durant will have to complete a sevenday quarantine, which would also rule him out of three additional games – at home against Philadelphia on Thursday, at Memphis on Friday and home again to play Oklahoma City on Sunday. Durant, who had coronavirus in May, tested negative in recent days. That would indicate Durant was exposed to someone who has tested positive for coronavirus, based on the protocols the NBA and NBPA are using. ESPN and The Athletic first reported Durant would be entering quarantine and missing games.
