Mourning High’s tennis coach Rubinstein to retire

- Miami Herald Staff Reports

Todd Rubinstein, the longtime boys’ and girls’ tennis coach at Alonzo & Tracy Mourning Senior High School, has announced his retirement after an award-winning career.

Rubinstein is a state and national Coach of the Year (three times each).

After 22 seasons as a high school tennis coach, Rubinstein retires with a career record of 506149-2, including two state champions (2016 — Tom Jaworski, 3A Overall Individual Singles; and 2017 — Tom Jaworski and Edward Luca, 3A Overall Individual Doubles).

These are the only state champions in Mourning High’s history in any sport.

Rubinstein started his coaching career at Piper High School in Broward in Sunrise in 1998. He took over the Barbara Goleman program from 2001-13, and then coached the

ATM Sharks in North Miami Beach from 201423. He ran a no-cuts program so that he could expose as many kids as possible to not just tennis, but also to being part of a team culture.

“After 22 years, it’s just time to move on and let someone else experience the unbelievable moments which I have been blessed to be a part of,” Rubinstein said. “Telling my intentions to the team at the end of last season was one of the most difficult and emotional things I’ve ever had to do, but deep down, I feel it’s just the right time to move on so I can focus more on my family and other projects I’m eager to be a part of. I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish and to be a part of something greater than myself. It’s all about the kids, their families and the schools I’ve been blessed to be connected with.”

Rubinstein is a former FHSAA state champion tennis player at Cooper City High, as he won the No. 4 singles position in 1987 and the No. 5 singles position in 1988 at the FHSAA 4A State Tennis Championships. He helped the Cowboys win the 4A state title in 1988 (which was the school’s first team state champion). One of his more memorable moments was after Rubinstein won his singles championship in 1987, he ran side-by-side with his father on the same oval where his father also won a state championship in track at the University of Florida.
