Mets send Giants to 5th straight loss

-

sponding roster move before the series finale this afternoon.

The Giants said Melancon, who hasn’t pitched since last Wednesday, has a mild right pronator strain. The 32-year-old right-hander, a three-time All-Star, has six saves in eight chances during his first season with San Francisco.

“It’s been with me since spring. Just at that point to where instead of having it linger, let’s knock it out,” Melancon said. “We’ve got the extra three days on the front end. So let’s be smart and make sure once we get this turnaround going, we’re full force ahead.”

For now, San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said, the team will go with a clos- er-by-committee approach.

Buster Posey went deep for the Giants on Tuesday, giving him home runs in consecutive games for the first time since July 2015.

Wheeler (2-2) tossed six innings in his best start since missing two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander was drafted sixth overall by San Francisco in 2009 and shipped to the Mets for slugger Carlos Beltran in July 2011.

Conforto homered in the seventh off Samardzija, who eventually settled in. He struck out nine and walked none but was tagged for six runs and a season-high 10 hits in seven innings.

“We’ve got plenty of talent on this team. I don’t think that’s the issue,” Samardzija said. “We need to go out there day to day and forget the past and play for today.”

Angels 7, Athletics 3 OAKLAND – Yunel Escobar hit a three-run homer and had four RBIs, Albert Pujols and Ben Revere added solo shots and Los Angeles beat Oakland.

Yonder Alonso homered twice for the A’s, raising his career-best total to 11 with his second career twohomer game – four days after his first.

Pujols homered in the first only to see Alonso answer with a two-run drive in the bottom half. Then the Angels hit two more in the second as the first seven runs all scores on long balls.

Escobar added an RBI groundout in the fourth and Cliff Pennington singled in a run to back Alex Meyer (1-1), who earned his first career road victory.

The A’s didn’t have that late-game magic on this night as Warriors star Kevin Durant watched from behind home plate. Oakland had won its previous three games with walkoffs.

Jharel Cotton (3-4) struck out the first two batters of the game before surrendering Pujols’ fifth homer on a drive to left-center.

Cotton, who fell to 0-4 in night games while going 3-0 during the day, allowed eight hits, a season-high seven runs and struck out seven with one walk over five innings.
