Redwood unleashes big bats against San Rafael

The Redwood High baseball team scored six runs in the fourth inning to break open a 17-3 victory over San Rafael on Friday.

Kai Christman, Merritt Brinckerho­ff, Cole McGowan, and Charlie Welch all drove in runs to power the big inning.

San Rafael scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead, until Redwood unleashed its offense. Redwood racked up 16 hits, led by Rory Minty's 3-for-3 day.

Redwood's Kent Goodman was the winning pitcher as he went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out four.

Ryan Scoles and Jack Healy each racked up multiple hits for San Rafael.

• Marin Catholic claimed a 12-4 victory on Friday, despite a big push by Terra Linda in the sixth inning, when Chris De Langis doubled to drive in three runs.

In the first inning, Terra Linda got their offense started with Henry Herrera's RBI single. De Langis led the Trojans at the plate as he went 3-for-3.

The Wildcats notched four runs in the fifth inning as Cruz Quezada, Carl Schmidt, and Nick Ferraro each had RBIs. Schmidt and Jayden Lee each had two hits for Marin Catholic.

Marin Catholic pitcher Alex Saavedra picked up the win as he struck out six batters across four innings, while allowing five hits and one run.

• Both teams were strong on the pitcher's mound Friday, but San Marin defeated Branson, 3-1, on Friday. Mustangs winning pitcher Andrew Henderson allowed just one run on six hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking one.

Boys volleyball

Archie Williams High School recovered for a 2426, 25-23, 25-13, 25-19 victory over Redwood on Thursday. Owen Johnson had 50 assists for the Peregrine Falcons, who defeated San Marin on Tuesday in straight sets. The Falcons' Alexander Lucich had 17 kills against the Giants, while Grayson Rivera came up with five digs. Will Gustafson had three aces and 13 kills.

Boys tennis

San Domenico shut out Internatio­nal, 5-0, on Friday, although there were some tense moments at No. 1 singles, where the Panthers' Chase Weaver rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 11-9 victory.

• Tam won three of the opening matches but needed one more clutch win to earn a 4-2 victory over Branson at College of Marin before the final match was called due to darkness on Thursday. Witt Bulger sealed the Hawks' victory with a come-frombehind win at No. 2 singles (7-5, 6-1), after overcoming an 0-3 deficit in the first set.

The Hawks received wins at No. 3 singles from Emmet McEvilley, No. 4 singles from Tyler Byrne, and No. 3 doubles with the pairing of Diego Castillo and Pablo Stuart.

The Bulls' Pete Stovell and Andrew Peng won at No. 2 doubles, and then Tommy Higgins and Leighton Fraser scored a win at No.1 doubles to narrow the overall gap to 3-2. At No. 1 singles, Carson Harrell of Tam split sets with Luke Tusher, and they will decide their individual match in a super-tiebreaker yet to be scheduled.

Boys golf

Fighting the darkness, Terra Linda defeated city rival San Rafael, 217-312, on Thursday. The Trojans' Shawn Madden took medalist honors with a 40 and teammate Kyle Martin carded a 41. Max Van Nye led San Rafael with a 54.
