Mary Denton, the chief executive officer of Side by Side, a San Anselmo-based nonprofit offering behavioral and mental health services to youths and their families, plans to retire in September after 20 years with the organization.

Denton joined the nonprofit as the chief financial officer in 2000 when it was called Sunny Hills Services, an organization founded as an orphanage in 1895. Before that, Denton had more than 19 years experience in banking, including serving as a vice president of Bank of America.

Denton led the rebranding of Side by Side in 2018, expanded the service to reach more than 2,000 clients a year and grew the agency’s revenue from approximately $6 million to $10 million a year.

The board of directors has formed a committee to find a replacement. Denton has promoted Larry Woodland,

the director of clinical practice and North Bay regional director, to the position of chief program officer to help with the transition.

Side by Side also operates in Alameda, Sonoma and Napa counties.
