There’s no Coach K, but Duke earns a W
Freshman Jayson Tatum matched a season high with 22 points, and No. 8 Duke held on to beat Boston College, 93-82, on Saturday in Jeff Capel’s season debut as Hall of Fame Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s temporary replacement.
Grayson Allen had 12 points and 11 assists, and the Blue Devils had six double-figure scorers in winning their first game at Cameron Indoor Stadium without Coach K since 1995.
Krzyzewski had back surgery Friday and is expected to miss roughly four weeks.
The Blue Devils (14-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) shot 55% but blew most of a 25-point lead, with the Eagles chipping away over the final 10 minutes and pulling to 88-82 on Ky Bowman’s reverse layup with 44.1 seconds left.
Tatum hit four free throws in the final 42 seconds to put Duke back up by double figures.
“I told them that we’re going to be OK, I told them to relax and let’s get back to doing what we did earlier in the game to build the lead,” Capel said. “We had to get stops. We have to move on to the next play.”
Jerome Robinson had 21 points for Boston College (8-8, 1-2).
at No. 2 Baylor 61, Oklahoma State 57: Manu Lecomte scored 17 points and the Bears closed in on the school’s first No. 1 ranking.
Baylor (15-0, 3-0 Big 12), one of two unbeaten teams in the nation along with No. 5 Gonzaga, is in position to reach the top of the poll after No. 1 Villanova’s 20-game winning streak ended Wednesday — the same night Baylor beat Iowa State on a late jumper from Lecomte.
A rowdy crowd that included new Baylor football Coach Matt Rhule in the first row of the student section chanted “No. 1, No. 1” in the final seconds of the Bears’ 11th straight home victory.
Phil Forte had 17 points to lead the Cowboys (10-5), who started 0-3 in conference for the first time since 1995-96, the last year of the Big Eight before it turned into the Big 12.
at No. 1 Villanova 93, Marquette 81: Kris Jenkins scored a season-high 23 points, Josh Hart had 19 and the Wildcats (15-1, 3-1 Big East) bounced back from their first loss of the season at Butler and still have not lost two straight games since 2013.
Jenkins made six of Villanova’s 14 three-pointers. Markus Howard led the Golden Eagles (10-5, 1-2) with 21 points.
at No. 3 Kansas 85, Texas Tech 68: Frank Mason III scored 26 points, Devonte Graham added a season-high 20 and the Jayhawks used a big second-half run to remain perfect in 17 tries against Texas Tech at home.
The Jayhawks (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) also pushed their home winning streak to a nation-leading 51 games.
No. 18 Butler 85, at Georgetown 76 (OT): Freshman Kamar Baldwin scored 16 points as the Bulldogs (14-2, 3-1 Big East) never trailed in the overtime to earn their third consecutive victory. L.J. Peak scored 21 points and Jagan Mosely added a career-high 20 for the Hoyas (8-8, 0-4), who lost their first four conference games for the first time since 1998-99.
