Trout’s home run helps Weaver hit a milestone
Outfielder’s three-run drive supports the right-hander, who earns 150th victory.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Mike Trout hit his 28th home run and Jered Weaver pitched six innings for his 150th victory and the Angels beat the Texas Rangers, 5-4, on Wednesday night.
Trout’s three-run drive against Derek Holland (7-9) in the fifth inning gave the Angels a 5-1 lead.
“We’re still fighting. We’re not going to give up. We’re just going to try to get some positives out of the end of the year and go from there,” Trout said. “It’s not fun when you’re not playing for a playoff spot.”
Weaver (12-12), who struck out six batters and gave up four runs, joined Chuck Finley (165) as the only pitchers to win 150 games for the Angels.
A California native who has spent all of his 11 seasons with the Angels, Weaver is 150-93 in 321 starts. The right-hander is 18-8 in 40 starts against the Rangers, his most victories against any opponent.
Andrew Bailey worked the ninth inning, giving up a two-out double to Elvis Andrus before hitting Jurickson Profar with a pitch. He earned his fourth save in four chances since his Angels debut Sept. 2.
Holland, who spent two months on the disabled list because of left shoulder inflammation, gave up five runs and six hits in five innings. He struck out three batters and walked two.
Rookie outfielder Nomar Mazara had three hits for Texas, including two runscoring singles. After his run-scoring hit in the fifth inning, he scored on Carlos Beltran’s homer that got the Rangers to within 5-4.
Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons had a leadoff single in the second inning and scored on Gregorio Petit’s two-out hit.
Albert Pujols drove home a run, his 114th, with a single in the third inning for a 2-0 lead.
With nine games remaining in the regular season, the magic number remained at two for the Rangers to clinch their second consecutive American League West title and seventh overall.
The Rangers open a three-game series at Oakland on Friday.
“Destiny is in our hands,” shortstop Elvis Andrus said.
