- Associated press

Tanner Mangum was 35 for 53 for 365 yards and connected with Mitch Mathews for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to help Brigham Young beat Connecticut, 30-13, on Friday night.

BYU led, 13-10, when Bronson Kaufusi intercepted Bryant Shirreffs’ pass under pressure. On the Cougars’ next play, Mangum found Mathews for a 20-10 lead. Connecticut answered with a field goal, but BYU recovered the onside kick and, six plays later, Mathews scored again.

BYU turned it over three times but outgained Connecticut, 539 to 230.

Mathews finished with eight catches for 78 yards for BYU (3-2). Terenn Houk added 129 receiving yards and Mitchell Juergens had 10 catches.

Francis Bernard powered in a short touchdown run on the first possession of the game. Connecticut tied it late in the first half on Shirreffs’ play-action pass to Arkeel Newsome for 30 yards. Shirreffs had one touchdown and two interceptions for Connecticut (2-3).

Florida’s Grier might sit out

No. 25 Florida might be without quarterback Will Grier against third-ranked Mississippi on Saturday.

Grier has been dealing with an illness this week and might not start against the Rebels, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because Florida (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) has not disclosed Grier’s illness.

Florida had about a dozen players miss practice this week because of a virus, but Coach Jim McElwain said Wednesday that he thought the bug had run its course.

If Grier doesn’t start, sophomore Treon Harris would make his second start this season.

Harris started the opener and split series with Grier, who has started the last three games.

Case against TCU players closed

Police say the case against two Texas Christian football players accused of stealing a case of beer while attacking another student and his friends has been closed with no charges being filed.

Fort Worth police spokesman Sgt. Steve Enright said Friday that the case was closed by the investigating detective after the victim refused to pursue charges against TCU senior defensive end Mike Tuaua and freshman receiver Andre Petties-Wilson.
