Simpson, Streb share lead

Webb Simpson chipped in twice for birdie and shot a five-under 67 for a share of the second-round lead with Robert Streb in the Wells Fargo Championsh­ip at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C. Streb had a 69 to match Simpson at 10-under 134. Martin Flores (67) and Patrick Rodgers (68) were tied for third at eight under. Top-ranked Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson were three shots back.

Alison Lee shot a four-under 67 to take a twostroke lead in the LPGA Tour’s Kingsmill Championsh­ip in Williamsbu­rg, Va. The 20-year-old Lee, still a student at UCLA after turning pro in December, had a nine-under 133 total on Kingsmill Resort’s River Course.

Australia’s Minjee Lee and France’s Perrine Delacour were tied for second.

Kevin Sutherland and Jeff Maggert both eagled the par-five 11th hole and shared the second-round lead in the Regions Tradition at 10 under.

Frederick Wedel shot a four-under 68 to highlight the Pepperdine men’s golf team’s second round of the NCAA regional in Bremerton, Wash. The Waves are in 10th place with a two-day total of an 11over 587. The top five teams will advance to the NCAA championsh­ips.

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee recommende­d reducing the shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds, the biggest step in a series of changes aimed at speeding up a game that has reached historic lows in scoring two of the last three seasons.

The new shot clock is to be in place the next two seasons and then be reevaluate­d. The changes still must be approved by the NCAA’s Playing Rules Oversight Committee, which meets next month.

To reduce the number of stoppages late in games, the committee called for reducing second-half timeouts by one per team and removing timeout calls in live-ball situations.

WNBA stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson were suspended seven games each for their domestic violence arrest last month — the league’s longest ban in its 19-year history.

Slovakia’s Peter Sagan took the Amgen Tour of California lead in the sixth stage, racing to a dominating victory in the reschedule­d and shortened individual time trial. Sagan, who also won the fourth stage, completed the 6.6-mile course that began and ended at Six Flags Magic Mountain in 12 minutes 31.85 seconds. He averaged 31.57 mph.

Dutchman Jos Van Eden was second, 15 seconds back. France’s Julian Alaphilipp­e finished third, 19 seconds behind Sagan.

Keen Pauline charged to a wire-to-wire victory in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes. A 15-1 longshot, Keen Pauline beat runner-up Include Betty by 23⁄4 lengths at Pimlico Race Course.

Kasey Kahne edged Erik Jones by 0.005 of second after a contact-filled final-lap duel Truck Series race at the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

Rafael Nadal was beaten, 7-6 (7), 6-2, by Stan Wawrinka in the Italian Open quarterfin­als in Rome, his fifth loss on clay this season.

Wawrinka will next face fellow Swiss player Roger Federer, who beat Tomas Berdych, 6-3, 6-3. Novak Djokovic beat Kei Nishikori, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

In the women’s tournament, Maria Sharapova defeated Victoria Azarenka, 6-3, 6-2.

Top-seeded USC defeated No. 16 Texas Tech, 4-0, at Waco, Texas, to advance to the NCAA women’s tennis quarterfin­als. The Trojans will face No. 8 Baylor on Sunday.

The seventh-seeded UCLA women’s team advanced with a 4-1 victory over No. 10 Texas A&M. The win sets up a rematch of last year’s NCAA title match, as the Bruins (21-4) will face second-seeded North Carolina (31-1) on Sunday.

UCLA beat visiting Cal State Northridge, 9-1, in their NCAA regional opener at Easton Stadium. UCLA will play Texas at noon Saturday.

Garo Yepremian, the former NFL kicker who helped the Miami Dolphins win consecutiv­e NFL championsh­ips but is best remembered for a Super Bowl blooper, died Friday of cancer. He was 70.
