Sooners share Big 12 crown

Victory gives Oklahoma a tie with Kansas State for the conference championship.

FORT WORTH — Landry Jones and Oklahoma treated their regular-season finale Saturday like a championship game, and finished wearing caps and T-shirts declaring the 12thranked Sooners the Big 12 Conference champions.

They then had to wait to see whether they would have to share their eighth Big 12 title or win it outright.

“Technically, we’re not sharing anything with anybody right now,” defensive end R.J. Washington said. “Right now, we’re the only Big 12 champions. We’ll see what happens later. Sharing it or not sharing it, winning the conference championship is great.”

As it turned out, Oklahoma’s 24-17 victory over Texas Christian gave the Sooners (10-2, 8-1 Big 12) a share of the Big 12 title with Kansas State, which defeated Texas, 42-24, Saturday night.

The Sooners likely will have a berth in a Bowl Championship Series game.

“In the end, it’s just great to be in this position and to be a winner again,” Coach Bob Stoops said.

Jones threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns as the Sooners won their eighth consecutive Big 12 game since a late-September loss to Kansas State.

Texas Christian (7-5, 4-5), the two-time BCS buster in its first Big 12 season, lost all four of its conference games at home.

The Horned Frogs were still within a touchdown when Oklahoma’s Mike Hunnicut missed a 42-yard field-goal try for with just under three minutes left.

Freshman quarterback Trevone Boykin, who finished with 231 yards passing, threw a 35yard pass to Cam White to the Oklahoma 12.

On third and 10 from there, Boykin ran into the end zone but the play was nullified because of a holding call.
