No. 8 Rublev fights off fever, bests Auger-aliassime for title at Madrid

Eighth-ranked Andrey Rublev fought through a fever that plagued him all week to rally past Felix Augeralias­sime 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the Madrid Open final for the 26-year-old Russian’s 16th ATP title and second Masters 1000 crown. Rublev also won at Monte Carlo last year. The 35th-ranked Auger-aliassime, a 23-yearold Canadian, double-faulted on the last point in his first Masters 1000 final.

■ Volleyball: At Gulf Shores, Ala., twin sisters

Nicole and Audrey Nourse won the deciding match for a second straight season as top-ranked Southern California won its fourth straight beach title with a 3-0 sweep over No. 2 UCLA. The Trojans (37-5) have won six of the eight titles since the NCAA recognized the sport in 2016. The Bruins (35-7) won the other two, in 2018 and ’19.

■ Hockey: At Espoo, Finland, 16-year-old Gavin Mckenna had a hat trick for Canada, which scored three times on a five-minute power play in the third period to rally past the United States 6-4 in the IIHF under-18 world final. The Canadians won their first gold since 2021.

■ Basketball: Chicago guard Lonzo Ball exercised the $21.4 million option on his contract for 202425. The 26-year-old was sidelined the past two-plus seasons with a left knee injury that required three surgeries.

■ Mixed martial arts: At Rio de Janeiro, hometown champion Alexandre Pantoja (28-5) unanimousl­y outpointed Australian Steve Erceg (12-2) to retain his flyweight belt Saturday at UFC 301.

■ Betting: A record $210.7 million was wagered on Saturday’s 150th Kentucky Derby, besting by $20 million the previous mark set last year, according to Churchill Downs.
