Parts of the Las Vegas Valley recorded more than an inch of rain Thursday after another afternoon of storms passed through, leaving wind damage and flooding in their wake.

Although Mccarran International Airport recorded just 0.03 inch of rain, part of Summerlin recorded 0.79 inch and Arroyo Grande Sports Complex in Henderson recorded 1.34 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service kept Clark County and several neighboring areas under a flash flood watch between noon and 9 p.m., but meteorologist Brian Planz said at 6:30 p.m. that most of the rain in the area had passed.

Humidity and cloud coverage kept Thursday’s high at 103 degrees, just below the average high of 105 for this time of year. The weather service recorded a humidity level of 34 percent Thursday evening, and Planz said the nights are usually a tad stickier.

Friday and Saturday are expected to reach 105 and 104, respectively. Planz said another round of storms is expected to roll in Sunday or Monday, bringing high temperatures back into the 90s.

“There’s just a chance every day of rain as it’s monsoon season,” he said.

Rain damage

The Metropolitan Police Department said on Twitter Thursday afternoon that officers had responded to multiple snapped power lines and “major flooding” in southeast Las Vegas. Police said vehicles were stuck near Russell Road and Broadbent Boulevard and near Boulder Highway and Desert Horizons Drive.

The city of Henderson said on Twitter that Arroyo Grande Sprots Complex will be closed this weekend because of “major damage and a power outage.” The city also reported water damage at Whitney Mesa Recreation Area and downed trees at Sunridge Park.

Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said in a Twitter post that his wife and grandchildren were feet away from a lightning strike near West Cheyenne Avenue and North Tenaya Way on Thursday afternoon. The family ran into a store for shelter, but the power went out and Szymanski said his grandson was hit by falling ceiling tiles.

“Everyone is pretty shook up, but OK,” he said.

Power outages near Boulder Highway and Sunset Road in Henderson left more than 2,100 without power around 7 p.m., and an online database from NV Energy indicated the cause of the outage was still under investigation Thursday night.
